U5.2 Civil War


Evaluate the multiple causes, key events, and complex consequences of the Civil War.
8 – U5.2.1 Explain the reasons (political, economic, and social) why Southern states seceded and explain the differences in the timing of secession in the Upper and Lower South. (C3, E1.2) (National Geography Standard 6, p. 154)
  • What specific content are involved? Politics, economics, and social issues in the country at the time.
  • What related goals (NETS, 21Ct skills, district or school mission, etc.)? Students will be able to understand why a change happened in the country and will be able to relate it to current problems in the world.
  • What are the Big Ideas, principles and processes that are addressed by this standard? Understanding the influence that political, economic and social changes has on a society.

8 – U5.2.2 Make an argument to explain the reasons why the North won the Civil War by considering the
• critical events and battles in the war
• the political and military leadership of the North and South

  • What specific content are involved? The North winning the Civil War and what factors led to this
  • What related goals (NETS, 21Ct skills, district or school mission, etc.)? Students will be able to critical think and discover why the result happened. In the end it will allow them to solve critical problems.
  • What are the Big Ideas, principles and processes that are addressed by this standard? Understanding the main events that led to the North winning the Civil War

TECH: Create a debate explaining why the North won and the South lost. Use Video, pictures, Smartboard, etc. NETS 6B


8 – U5.2.3 Examine Abraham Lincoln’s presidency with respect to
• his military and political leadership
• the evolution of his emancipation policy (including the Emancipation Proclamation)
• and the role of his significant writings and speeches, including the Gettysburg Address and its relationship to the Declaration of Independence (C2)
  • What specific content are involved? The understanding of the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln.
  • What related goals (NETS, 21Ct skills, district or school mission, etc.)? Using video to interpret what they believe the President was like. This will allow them to use imagination and technology to create an image.
  • What are the Big Ideas, principles and processes that are addressed by this standard? Understanding the Presidency of Lincoln.

8 – U5.2.4 Describe the role of African Americans in the war, including black soldiers and regiments, and the increased resistance of enslaved peoples.

  • What specific content are involved? Understanding how war effects others.
  • What related goals (NETS, 21Ct skills, district or school mission, etc.)? Using technology to find primary sources and be able to feel sympathey for the people of the past.
  • What are the Big Ideas, principles and processes that are addressed by this standard? Understanding the consequences of war on people and the country.

TECH: NETS 3C Find a primary source that gives a reflection of a Civil War participant. Primary Source Example
